Kathleen Swanson

Level 3 CIYT | Director, Iyengar Yoga Source

Kathleen came to yoga the way many devoted practitioners do - through necessity. Born with congenital knee problems, she began studying with senior Iyengar teachers in her early twenties following reconstructive surgery, seeking both recovery and a path to lasting wellbeing. What started as rehabilitation became a lifelong commitment. She has practiced continuously since 1993.

Growing up with parents who studied Iyengar Yoga - and who practice into their 80s - Kathleen understands firsthand what a sustainable, intelligent practice looks like over a lifetime. That perspective shapes everything about how she teaches.

A Level 3 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher, Kathleen continues to study weekly with senior teacher Patricia Walden and has attended classes at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India - the source of the Iyengar method. She has also participated as a yoga instructor in NIH-funded research studies with Brown Health and Lifespan.

Kathleen's teaching is precise, practical, and deeply attentive. She is especially skilled at helping students work through limitations - knee, back, and shoulder issues in particular - and believes that with the right instruction, yoga is accessible to everyone at every stage of life.

"Kathleen's teaching style is wonderful. The alternate poses make the class work for everyone's ability level. Great for mind and body." — Lori T.
